OUR FAVOURITE CANADIAN YOUTUBE SENSATION AND HIS OFFBEAT BEARD

LOL’D AT BY LIGHTERFLUID

Canadian comedian and actor Jon Lajoie is one of the few talents who has been able to manifest the cult following for his Internet videos into a mainstream audience, placing him in a preeminent spot in the comedy landscape. With ironically singsong lyrics about everything from boring everyday activities to genitals and getting high, his videos have over 100 million aggregate views on YouTube and Lajoie’s website alone, with “Show Me Your Genitals” recently surpassing the benchmark of 10 million views.

Known primarily for his comedic anthems “High As F#%k,” “Show Me Your Genitals,” and “Everyday Normal Guy,” Lajoie responded to the popularity of two of his videos by making sequels. He followed up “Everyday Normal Guy” with “Everyday Normal Guy 2” and “Everyday Normal Crew,” as well as the sequel to “Show Me Your Genitals,” “Show Me Your Genitals 2: E=MC Vagina.” The sequels furthered the notoriety of the characters he created and Lajoie is now met by audiences who eagerly await the appearance of their favorites during his live shows. Many of his die-hard fans don t-shirts emblazoned with the characters’ distinct visages. Lajoie has also parodied late-night infomercials, peddling “pedophile beards,” “rapist glasses,” and methods of stress relief in his “not giving a fuck” video. Lajoie previously starred in “L’Auberge Du Chien Noir” (“The Inn of the Black Dog”), a primetime dramedy on French-Canadian TV after graduating from Dawson College’s theatre program in 2001.

Currently touring the United States and Canada in conjunction with the release of his album “You Want Some of This” on ITunes and Amazon.com (as well as his website), Lajoie is kicking off his tour at Canadian Music Week and South by Southwest. He will then make his way across the country, touring until the Montreal Comedy Festival where he will again be a main headliner. The rampant success of Lajoie’s internet videos landed him a talent development deal with HBO. He is also a regular on the leading comedy website, Will Ferrell’s and Adam McKay’s www.Funnyordie.com. Ferrell and McKay, having quickly became fans, are also in the process of collaborating on a project with Lajoie.

SWITCHFOOT: NICHE-MARKET CHRISTIAN ROCKERS? ANYTHING ELSE?

LALALA LACKLUSTRE

So, who are these Christian-rock cowboys that will not fucking go away? Well, let me tell you: After ten non-stop years of working as the world’s most humble multi-million selling rock band, the hard-charging North County San Diego-based quintet, Switchfoot is set to step into the spotlight with their latest release Hello Hurricane and a just announced Canadian Tour.

“For the last decade or so, we’ve been a rock band that really thrives off that interaction with the crowd,” states Butler.  “Our motivation for playing music in the first place was a desire to connect with people in a deeper way.”  Out of this connection the band’s renowned live show has developed an incredibly loyal following both here in the states and abroad.

Switchfoot got their start in 1996 when the brothers Jon and Tim Foreman and Chad Butler came together around a mutual love of surfing and a passion for rock music spurred by such personal Southern California guitar heroes as Rocket from the Crypt, Drive like Jehu, Boilermaker, Three Mile Pilot and Heavy Vegetable.  “Growing up in San Diego, my heroes were the bands that had sold maybe 30,000 records,” says the elder Foreman.  “I’d never seen U2, so those were the bands that gave me my perspective of what a big rock show was.  There was a feeling of camaraderie in San Diego that afforded us the freedom in those early days to try anything – even if it meant failing.  I don’t think we’d be the band that we are today if we’d started in LA.”

Switchfoot seems to be one of those bands that have an ‘underground’ following of people who are almost too embarrassed to say that they like Switchfoot? Does that make sense? Does your average switchfoot fan run out and buy the album or a concert ticket??? I think…. NO. But I could be wrong. When their January 2010 western Canada tour got announced, I thought that people were going to blow their lids. People were STOKED on it… however, that failed to translate into tangible success. Now, if you want my legit opinion on the matter, here it is: Switchfoot can put out a catchy song, they know how to captivate a niche market (Christian-rock). However, they need to branch out and give their fans a reason to be loyal and a reason to hit the shows. Is that unfair to say.

A LITTLE SNIPPET ABOUT 2009 AND WHAT'S IMPORTANT

BARFED BY beetle

It is important, namely at this time of year, to remember what is truly important. I know that it sounds cliché to say and is lame-zor, but it is nothing but the truth. I, being a naturally dramatic person, can find it hard to remember the positive and wonderful things that are happening; I usually focus on what is wrong or what could go wrong. I am trying, for myself and for the sanity of those around me, to work on that. I do have a lot of things to be greatful for this year. 2009 has been a total wreck-of-a-shitstorm, however, I have come out on top. I have a completely wonderful boyfriend who I have been with all year and honestly can’t wait to spend 32432 more years with, my family has made it through and I have a secure and amazing job. I mean, really? What do I have to complain about? I have love for others and others have love in me, THAT is what is important to remember right now (and always.) Again, sorry with the pointless little post… but I have had a lot on my mind lately and this is sort of my way of getting it out of my head and coming to realize it myself. For those who have stuck by me this year, thankyou. 2010 is going to be my year.

A BAND YOU SHOULD KNOW: the morning benders
BY LACKLUStre

This is a band that you should know about... if you don't know about them already. As a matter of fact, I have only come to know about them since their show got announced this week. However, I have fallen deeply and madly inlove with the morning benders. Reminiscent of early Shins, youthful Berkeley trio the Morning Benders are poised to become modern masters of truly great pop tunes. Each magical ditty is delivered with frontman Chris Chu’s boyish vocals wafting over rhythmic tambourines, drums and guitars. Mixing 60’s rhythms, rockabilly grooves and dark country beats with simple themes and creative lyrics, The Morning Benders waste no time in capturing the essence of modern indie pop. The band’s latest album “Talking through Tin Cans”, has been attracting rave critical attention since its release in 2008 and their legion of followers is continuously growing. Live, the entire band comes together with impeccable timing, proving their time spent playing in California clubs has molded them into tomorrow’s leaders of sunny pop.  They kind of remind me of Blitzen Trapper? (Who's album... Furr... is one of my all time favourite albums! Check out the videoooo and check livenation.com for ticket info. I believe that they are playing the Media Club in the new year!
