DISMANTLING THE BAND

BELLE & SEBASTIAN WHERE THE FUCK HAVE I BEEN HIDING THAT I HAVEN’T HEARD THEM ALREADY?!
DISMANTLED BY ELECTRYONE

Apparently they’ve been around since 1996, so why have I had to live so long without them? A friend suggested them yesterday and was shocked that I hadn’t heard of them. They’re very soft, pretty, and musical – technically I guess indie pop, and include instruments such as piano, violin, and trumpet. Since I pretty much love anything with nice keys, this seems to be a pretty good match. Really I listen to a variety of music, but lately it’s been more of a random mix of ska and harder rock so this is exactly what I needed. I think regardless of your music preferences you should fall in love with these guys, the sound is universal.
Some technical details:
Band: Belle & Sabastian
City: Glasgow, Scotland
Since: January, 1996
Have been compared to: Bob Dylan, the Smiths

Well, since I’m discovering them myself, I won’t pretend to be able to tell you their best songs and defining characteristics... So I HIGHLY suggest you visit them at myspace.com/thebandbelleandsebastian or belleandsebastian.com
And if you don’t? Well... you’re really super missing out... Really.

SOCIAL COMBUSTION

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: DANNY GOLDBERG

POSTED BY beeTLE

If a stud like Mick Jagger could complain that he could get "no satisfaction," it meant that it was okay if I didn't. If John Lennon could sing "In my life," it was safe to express emotion. If a genius like Bob Dylan could feel betrayed by a friend as expressed in "positively 4th street," it meant that I was not a loser. If Greenwich village hipsters like Lovin’ Spoonful could believe that rock and roll had "the magic that can set you free," I was not naive. If rock and roll could somehow express the complex mix of deeply personal, sexual, political and spiritual feelings banging around my teenage head and simultaneously have a similar resonance with millions of others, I was not alone. - Danny Goldberg

FILM SYNTHESIS

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE IS NOT WHERE ARTISTIC VISION PREVAILS

reviewED by BEETLe

4 of the HIKTS contributors landed themselves into the Beat 94.5’s exclusive ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ movie premiere on Saturday morning. We were all super amped on getting into the premiere. The 4 of us had all been waiting for this movie for over a year, so needless to say, it was worth it for us to make the 7am trek to North Vancouver to see it. I loved Maurice Sendak's book “Where The Wild Things Are” as a child and could not wait to see how director, Spike Jonze, would adapt the book to a live-action film. Initially after seeing the movie, I love it; everything about it. The soundtrack is epic, the shots were awesome, I liked the little quirks off of the original book, the acting was great and the whole visual concept was really neat.  However, the more that I read about the problems that this film had in it’s inception, the more that I moved away from my love of the movie. Spike Jonze, for starters, had nothing but battles in getting the film to a standard that he was comfortable with. It was waaaay back in 2000 that Jonze took the film from Universal and moved it over to Warner due to creative differences. It was not until 2005 that the screenplay was completed and the movie’s wheels finally got turning. Filming began mid 2006 in Australia. In 2008, however, the film hit a serious speed bump when footage was leaked. Spike Jonze responded with: "That was a very early test with the sole purpose of just getting some footage to Ben our VFX supervisor to see if our VFX plan for the faces would work." The film was then given another 15 MILLION dollars (bringing the budget to a whopping 90 Million Dollars!!!) to revamp the production and reshoot some more ‘family friendly scenes’. THIS is where my issue lies with the film. In my opinion, you can drastically tell where Spike Jonze’s vision lies with the movie and where Warner interjected froofy scenes of happiness. The general theme of the film is NOT bunnies and sunshine! The story revolves around a child’s imagination, loneliness and the realization of reality verses fantasy; it is not an overly uplifting theme. Spike Jonze most def touched on the theme in the most honest way that he could without making the moving totally doom and gloom. However, I personally, would have liked him to delve into more of the theme. It was skimmed a little to closely for me. I give props to Warner for taking on this film, which’s book was controversial and one of the first “dark emotion” Children’s books. The author, Maurice Sendak that he has ”never seen a movie that looked or felt like this. And it’s [Spike Jonze's] personal ‘this.’ And he’s not afraid of himself. He’s a real artist that lets it come through in the work. So he’s touched me. He’s touched me very much. So clearly, I may be waaaay off base and this movie may just be EXACTLY what it is supposed to be… hmmm.  All-in-all, I liked the movie. I didn’t love the movie. If you loved the book… go and see it… just keep in mind the concept of “artistic vision” and what sells in today’s society. I think that this movie is the perfect juxtaposition of the two. That is its only downfall.
