MAXIMUM EXCITEMENT LEVELS REACHED: THOM YORKE!
pOSTed by analog

LA is probably the most exciting city on earth.  Sure the smog will choke your lungs, the traffic makes Vancouver look like country living and the closest thing they have to mountains is the Hollywood Hills, but where else in the world can you see Thom Yorke play in a 600 capacity nightclub?  Well that’s what exactly what happened Friday at the Echoplex.  I’m almost in disbelief that his new live band includes friend and producer Nigel Godrich, Flea, and Joey Waronker, the drummer for Beck and REM.  Since The Eraser came out, I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for Thom to put this type of band together and now it’s finally happened.  I guess the only question left to answer is if this destined-to-be-short-lived project will come to me or whether I will have to go to it.  Los Angeles here I come….

I leave you with an undeniably funky version of “Harrowdown Hill” from Friday night at the Echoplex.

FILM SYNTHESIS

THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS: WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!
 SYNTHESIZED BY TheVoiceofReason

When I had first heard of the movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, I at once imagined a Tim Burtonesque movie, with a slightly creepy and yet imaginative feel too it. As time went on I found out that the movie was Heath Ledger’s last film, and that he had passed away during it’s making, and they had gotten Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law to all play the same character as Ledger. At this stage I realized the movie could have gone two ways, it could have either been a great movie, with a cast delivering the message with precision and talent, or it could have been a convoluted train wreck, unfortunately, I’m leaning towards the latter.

Essentially the movie revolves around Doctor Parnassus and his Imaginarium, unfortunately that’s pretty much all I could tell you. Throughout the movie many questions are raised, and almost none of them are answered. I often found myself sitting there wondering why this was happening, or who that character was to the story, and found that there were no answers to my dilemma’s.  The only thing I didn’t find confusing was the switch between actors for the same character, and that truly was because they did a rather fine job at explaining the change.

As much as I love Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger and Colin Ferrell, I am severely disappointed with this film. A movie that claimed imagination and wonder in large amounts, brought only confusion and many head scratching moments. Heath Ledger does a wonderful job on his part however, as do the other actors portraying him, especially Jude Law as much as I hate to admit it.  But by the end of the movie, it felt like the four actors were indeed four different people, and I found myself saying I disliked Colin Farrell’s character, while I liked Johnny Depp’s, when in fact they played the same person. I dearly would like to say I enjoyed this movie, and while it did deliver a few funny moments and some nice acting on the part of Heath Ledger’s character (I’m abbreviating it to just Ledger since I don’t feel like typing out all the names of the actors) I feel this movie was just too convoluted, and just made me question so many things that were never even answered.

So in short I feel this movie just didn’t measure up to what I thought it would, but it does deliver some nice dialogue and acting. I don’t recommend this movie for people who like a lot of answers to their questions, but for those who really just don’t care and want to see a movie for the hell of it, I’d wait for this to come out on dvd.

SOCIAL COMBUSTION

STEREOS: WARNING FAKE BADASS APPEAL. APPROACH WITH CAUTION.

COMBUSTed by LIGHERfluuuuid

Live Nation announced yesterday that Stereos is touring Western Canada with The Midway State, The Envy and Artist Life. I can't decide what to think about Stereos... I really can't. Part of me wants to hate them hard and passionately. The other part of me wants to dance and sing and be merry. I mean, WHAT HAS THE WORLD COME TO?! Since when do tattoo'd white boys since autotuned bubble pop?! TATTOO'D WHITE BOYS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BADASS. This is where it confuses me... Walls and stereotypes in music are falling... i mean, they MUST be if a label is backing boys who look like they should be screaming and singing about sacrificing goats to Satan (yet put out a bubble pop CD)...?! right?! Auuugh, please, someone enlighten me on this marketing ploy... LET ME IN on why this is happening?!?! 6 Months ago these guys were just boys from Edmonton who landed them selves on Much Music's DisBand... now? International pop phenomenas with two chart topping singles... I'm telling you... someone loved them... and vouched for them pretty damn well... Cause their sales, radioplay and all that jazz show that these guys might be around for a while...  It's too bad the songs are catchy... otherwise I would be able to write a 10,000 word essay on how WRONG Stereos are for the world... except... I can't... cause while I am typing this... I am finding myself humming "Throw Ya Hands Up"... epic fail.

DISMANTLING THE BAND

MATISYAHU: MAT-IS-YAH-WHOO IS EASY GOOD TIMES

DISMANTLed by BEETLE

Few artists make an impact as complete as the one Matisyahu made with his Top 40 hit “King Without a Crown”: Here was a true original, the song announced-a Hasidic Jewish musician from New York City singing reggae songs about his religious devotion. Fans responded to this one-of-a-kind voice, too, driving Youth, Matisyahu’s Grammy-nominated 2006 studio disc, to the top spot on Billboard’s reggae albums chart. That album, as well as Matisahu’s previous recording Live at Stubb’s, went Gold.
True originals, though, don’t stay put for long, and on his bold new album, Light, 29-year-old Matisyahu proves that there’s much more to his artistry than might initially meet the eye. “As my musical tastes have grown I have been re-discovering my sound and my voice,” he says.
Light is anything but safe. Produced by David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Sublime, the Strokes), the 14-track collection covers a dizzying amount of stylistic ground, from hard-edged dancehall (“Smash Lies”) and ska-inflected New Wave (“We Will Walk”) to laidback pop-rock (“So Hi So Lo”) and acoustic folk-soul (“I Will Be the Light”). While reggae is far from absent here-see the old-school toasting in “Motivate”-Light finds Matisyahu edging away from his comfort zone into more daring territory. “Being an artist is about being sensitive to how the world resonates inside you and then being able to express it,” he says. “This process is an ever-changing one.”
